Technique Used: Static Headspace Analysis by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) Testing
A pharmaceutical company wanted to test for the amount of residual methyl methacrylate monomer in their poly methylmethacrylate product. The product was extracted using a proprietary method developed by Innovatech Labs and then analyzed using the static headspace attachment to the Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) Analysis. The concentration of residual MMA was determined by comparing standards of known concentrations of MMA. Figure 1 shows a standard curve of the concentration of Residual MMA versus the response of the MMA standards in the gas chromatogram. The result of GC/MS testing, a gas chromatogram of one of the extracted products is shown in Figure 2. The retention time of MMA is ca. 1.2 min. The concentration of Residual MMA for this product was 289.4 ppm.
