services > gas chromatography / mass spectrometryGas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry - (GC/MS)In GC/MS, the sample is injected into a gas chromatograph which volatilized the sample, then separates the various components of the sample based on size and/or polarity. The separated components then go into a mass selective detector. The resulting mass spectrum allows for the identification of the components using standard reference libraries. Quantitative results can be obtained through the use of standards. Sensitivity ranges can be as low as picogram levels.
Headspace / Outgassing Analyses Outgassed products can be identified by the GC/MS using either static or dynamic headspace analysis. The sample is placed in a sealed vessel, heated, then the gasses within the vessels are sampled in static headspace. In dynamic headspace analysis, the sample is placed in a vessel that is purged with ultra-pure nitrogen during heating. The gas flows into the vessel and out through a tube packed with sorbent material. The outgassing products are trapped on the sorbent tube. The tube is then placed in a desorption unit, where it is heated and the collected materials are flushed into the GC/MS for analysis. |
